Auckland Castle

Country residence of the Bishops of Durham since Norman times, Auckland Castle is spectacular.

Its chapel, reputedly the largest private chapel in Europe, and the state rooms, including the Bishop’s Throne Room, are open to the public.

There is also access to the Bishop’s Park, with its 18th century “Gothic” deer shelter:

Whitworth Hall & Gardens

The extensively restored former family home of “Bonnie Bobby Shafto”, Whitworth Hall boasts a wonderful venue for events and exceptional grounds where deer roam.The Hall also has a walled garden, Dene gardens, two lakes, wildfowl and woodland walks.
