From soccer stars to seaside trips – Community Grants approved

Footballers, day trippers, revellers and thespians are all set to benefit from Spennymoor Town Council’s Community Grant pot.

The Council fund was created to support projects that have a positive impact on the community and to help individuals and organisations realise their ambitions or compete in a variety of contests.

The grants are open to anyone in the town or surrounding communities.

Among the latest Community Grant recipients are:

  • Dogwood Productions CIC, which will receive £250 to create several free places for young people attending a forthcoming theatrical production at the Spennymoor Everyman Theatre in October.
  • Byers Green Primary School successfully applied for £500 to fund equipment that will allow it to support a new football academy.
  • Kirk Merrington Over 65’s group had £1,000 approved to go towards the cost of its annual trip to Whitby; and Star Fundraising will receive the same amount towards the cost of Middlestone Moor aged peoples’ trip to Bridlington.
  • Finally, £1,000 was awarded to Byers Green Fun Day, helping cover the cost of the 2024 event that will be held on Saturday June 29.

Spennymoor Town Council Mayor, Cllr Ian Geldard, said: “One of the most important and rewarding things we do as a council is supporting local projects that bring joy to our residents and helping people attend events and enjoy trips away.

“2024 is the Town Council’s 50th anniversary year, and we are pleased and proud to be able to continue and progress five decades of supporting the local community in this way.”

Myra Smith, who has been organising senior citizens’ trips for over 20 years, said: “This funding is so important.

“We take older people, most of whom don’t have cars, out for a lovely day at the coast where they can shop at the market and spend time enjoying a change of scenery.

“On the last trip, one man said to me, “this is the most I’ve spoken in over three months!” and that was a real reminder of how vital these trips are to some people.”
