Spennymoor remembers

Spennymoor paused in silent reflection last weekend during the town's Armistice Day and Remembrance Services.

Reverend Matt Tarling conducted the service at the war memorial on Saturday, with the order and timing of the event overseen by Parade Marshall Peter Gray, with the Last Post, Reveille and National Anthem played beautifully by a Spennymoor Town Band member.

Thank you to Chris Lewarne who organised the Standards, the Standard bearers and veterans who read the Homage & Kohima Epitaph.

The Remembrance Sunday Service in the Town Hall, conducted by Reverend Matt Tarling and Methodist Minister Liesl Warren was well attended, with people joining the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Dame Maura Regan, Town Mayor & Mayoress, Cllr Ian Geldard and Sadie Hartnett, in the parade to the War Memorial.

Once again, the clergy delivered an emotional service, with Parade Marshall Mr Peter Gray and ensuring the order and timing of the event were well delivered.

Spennymoor Town Band provided beautiful accompaniment to the service, that was attended by many people from the town and beyond, which fell silent once again to honour those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Service personnel from 3 Rifles, 8 Rifles attended as well as cadets from both 2504 (Bishop Auckland) Squadron Royal Air Force Cadets and Spennymoor Army Cadets. Thanks to Spennymoor Army Cadets who were an enormous help at the event.

Father Gareth Gladman conducted service at War Memorial, at which piper Arthur Middleton played the lament and the Town Band performed.

Veterans once again read the homage and Kohima epitaph with 8 rifles providing an honour guard with standard bearers present.

Children from North Park Primary School, Oxclose Primary School, Rosa Street Primary School, St Charles Primary School read beautiful poems at the service and wreaths were laid.

The Town Council would like to thank the Spennymoor Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal organiser for all her hard work.
