Spennymoor Town Council is proud to announce the launch of Echoes of Her North: the quiet architects of our communities, a powerful new exhibition which honours the women whose resilience, passion, and quiet influence have shaped communities across the North East. This exhibition invites audiences to explore identity, place, and the enduring echoes of women’s contributions woven throughout the region’s landscape.
Echoes of Her North shines a light on women whose stories have too often gone unheard. Through evocative artwork and community collaboration, the exhibition celebrates those who inspired change, passed down knowledge through generations, and helped define who we are today. It is both a tribute and an act of recognition – giving voice to the underrepresented and elevating narratives that deserve to be remembered.
Alongside the exhibition, visitors are invited to take part in an evolving creative project centred around Mnemosyne, a sculptural garment dedicated to memory, legacy, and collective storytelling. The piece is designed to grow throughout the exhibition’s run, incorporating fabric panels made by members of the public. Visitors can drop into the Makers Space to create their own fabric contribution, celebrating the women who have influenced and inspired their own lives.
In addition, artist Jayne Blacklock will be leading free community workshops over the coming months, offering deeper engagement with the themes of the exhibition.

Echoes of Her North invites audiences to explore, reflect, and connect with the strength, artistry, and identity embedded in northern heritage. It is an exhibition that not only looks back, but actively builds a shared future—one story, stitch, and memory at a time.
The Exhibition is open to the public from Monday 9th March until Saturday 1st August. The Bob Abley Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, admission is free.
