A Budget backing vibrant events and strong services

Spennymoor is set for another positive year as the Town Council approves its 2026/27 budget, putting community spirit, exciting events, and well‑loved services at the forefront.

Under the new budget, residents can look forward to the continued care and enhancement of Jubilee Park, well‑maintained sports pitches and recreation areas, and high standards across allotments and cemeteries.

The Town Hall and community centres will continue to provide welcoming places for activities, events and community groups, while cultural highlights such as the Bob Abley Art Gallery and Town Hall remain supported and promoted.

The Council is particularly excited about another strong year of events. Much‑loved favourites – including Party in the Park, the fireworks display, Santa visits, seasonal celebrations, and the Armed Forces Week Family Fun Day – all return in 2026.

A brand‑new “Celebrate Spennymoor” event will shine a spotlight on the people, heritage and creativity that make the town special and weekly family activity days will again bring Jubilee Park to life throughout the summer.

The budget also continues to support community groups with grants, ensuring opportunities remain accessible for everyone, and the Council has set aside additional funds to ensure play areas across the parish can receive updates and repairs where needed, helping to keep them safe, enjoyable and well‑used by local families.

Town Mayor, Cllr Liz Maddison, said: “Our town thrives because of the people who live here, volunteer here, and care so deeply about Spennymoor’s future. This budget ensures we continue supporting the services and community spaces residents rely on, while investing in events and activities that bring us together. I’m incredibly proud of the commitment shown to keeping Spennymoor vibrant, welcoming, and full of opportunity.”

The Council agreed a small and carefully managed precept rise of 3.49%, which works out at just £2.55 a year for Band D homes and £1.70 for Band A households, aided by continued growth across the town’s council tax base. It means Spennymoor can continue investing in things residents value most, while keeping the impact on household budgets to a minimum.

Council Leader, Cllr Billy McAloon, said: “Spennymoor is a brilliant, welcoming town and this budget helps us keep it that way. We’re able to protect services residents rely on every day while also delivering an exciting calendar of free events. We know how much people value these moments of fun and togetherness, so we’re proud to keep them at the heart of our plans.

“We’ve listened carefully, managed costs responsibly and kept any increase to an absolute minimum. Thanks to our growing tax base, we can invest positively in the town without placing a heavy burden on households.”
