The line-up is a fantastic mix of free family fun days, musical extravaganzas and some tributes to our Armed Forces, reinforcing the Town Council’s commitment to enhancing community spirit and ensuring the town remains a fantastic place to live, work and visit.
The calendar of events spans the entire year, taking in large-scale summer celebrations to seasonal favourites and heritage activities, and begins with a celebration of women’s creativity, leadership and contribution on International Women’s Day in March.
It features the return of the hugely popular Family Fun Day supporting Armed Forces Week, Party in the Park, which brings thousands of people to the town; the popular Big Brass Bash, a refreshed Celebrate Spennymoor event (featuring the horticultural show) and a series of weekly family activity days in Jubilee Park throughout the summer break.
The Council also continues to support major regional traditions and events, including Spennymoor Gala and Durham Miners’ Gala, while introducing enhanced heritage events in the Town Hall aligned with national and regional heritage festivals and open days.

Autumn and winter see the return of the Halloween celebrations, Fireworks Night, Remembrance and Armistice commemorations, the town’s Christmas Tree Lights Switch-On, Santa events for schools and annual Carol Service.
Town Mayor, Cllr Liz Maddison, added: "We recognise the importance for families, especially in the current climate, to have access to high-quality events throughout the year without the barrier of cost.
“From dancing at Party in the Park to honouring the service of our Armed Forces, through to our incredible Christmas celebrations, this programme ensures there is something for everyone in our community.”
Leader of Spennymoor Town Council, Cllr Billy McAloon, said: “We are proud to invest in this vibrant programme of free events, helping bring people together to celebrate together – something that makes Spennymoor very special.
“These events are about more than entertainment, they strengthen community ties, support local pride and create opportunities for families to make lasting memories together.”
On Sunday March 8, the Town Hall welcomes Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Dame Susan Snowdon; Jill Cole, Chair of Culture Durham; Michelle Cooper, CEO of Point North; and mural artist Nocciola the Drawer (Hazel Oakes), of STRIKE Collective, for a morning of reflection, conversation and artistic expression and exclusive preview of forthcoming exhibition “Echoes of Her North: The Quiet Architects of Our Communities”, opening in the Bob Abley Gallery on March 9.
The International Women’s Day event runs from 10:00am to 12:30pm at Spennymoor Town Hall, with refreshments and breakfast snacks provided. Tickets are £3 and available via Eventbrite: Event details and sign-up.
The Council prides itself on delivering a strong, inclusive events programme that plays a vital role in enhancing wellbeing, boosting footfall for town businesses and fostering a sense of belonging across all generations.
