Spennymoor Remembrance Sunday Service – Honouring Our Heroes
On Sunday, 9th November 2025, Spennymoor came together in a moving tribute to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Parade Marshall Peter Gray oversaw the event to ensure military protocols were adhered to.
The day began with a service in the Town Hall, conducted by Reverend Matt Tarling. Over 300 people attended notably Dame Maura Regan, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for County Durham, along with Spennymoor Town Mayor Cllr Liz Maddison and other civic dignitaries, standard bearers, veterans and representatives from various organisations and members of the public.
A strong military presence added to the significance of the occasion with over 50 personnel from 1 CS BN REME in attendance along with personnel from 8th Rifles. Spennymoor Army Cadets kindly assisted throughout the event.
Following the Town Hall service, a parade formed for the march to the war memorial. As hundreds of people gathered Father John Livesley conducted the remainder of the service where 8th Rifles provided an honour guard. Spennymoor Town Band delivered poignant performances throughout the event. Buglers from REME sounded the Last Post and reveille at the war memorial as many wreaths and crosses were laid. Adding a heartfelt touch to conclude the service, pupils from five local primary schools read poems, reminding everyone of the enduring importance of Remembrance across generations.
Spennymoor’s Remembrance Sunday was a powerful testament to community spirit and respect for those who served and sacrificed. We will remember them.
Wreaths were also laid at Byers Green, Tudhoe and Kirk Merrington and at Tudhoe cemetery.
