We are partnering with cultural hub “Baccanalia” to deliver the talks, that focus on Norman Cornish and Tisa Hess, as part of South West Durham Heritage Fayre.

On September 6, 11am, the Bob Abley Gallery will proudly host:

“Norman Cornish – His life and work” will be delivered by the famed artist’s son, John and offer an illustrated talk about his father’s journey through life as a miner before gaining national recognition as an artist. The talk will feature many of his most iconic works and outline some of the key moments in his career as an artist.

This will be followed at 1pm by:

“Tisa Hess – Tisa and the Spennymoor Settlement: Countess von der Schulenburg and the coal miners of County Durham.”

John Banham’s talk looks at how and why a German Countess came to teach art and sculpture in a Durham mining town in the 1930s, taking in Tisa’s background and influence she had on the art produced by the Settlement.

To register, visit: Tisa and the Spennymoor Settlement.

Attendance for each talk is limited to 30 people
