The substantial sum was raised through a variety of events and initiatives throughout the year, including charity dinner, raffles, race night, and civic gatherings, with all proceeds split between supporting this much-valued local resource and important international charity.
The Learning Library will receive over £3,300. The much-valued service offers free access to books, lap pads, educational material and promotes inclusive activities for all ages and abilities across Spennymoor communities, not to mention provide spinning and motor skill resources, sensory lighting, outdoor games and specialist tricycles.
The same sum will also be going to the Gurkha Trust, which provides financial, medical and development aid to Gurkha veterans, their families and communities, enabling Gurkha veterans, their families and wider communities to live their lives with dignity in Nepal.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, one of his final duties as Town Mayor, Cllr Taylor said: “It has been an honour and privilege to serve as Mayor of Spennymoor and this donation is a wonderful way to bring my term to a close.
“Supporting the Learning Library has been especially meaningful to me, as it encapsulates what makes our town special – community spirit, a desire to learn and promote inclusivity, and the Gurkha Welfare trust is a charity that is very close to my heart.
“I’m incredibly grateful to my fellow councillors, Spennymoor Town Council’s excellent staff and to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts over the year. These two donations are a reflection of Spennymoor’s generosity and commitment to one another.
“And finally, I’d like to thank my consort for the year, my sister-in-law Mrs Debbie Taylor for her constant support and companionship throughout my time as Mayor.”
The Spennymoor Learning Library, based at Oxford Road, is a volunteer-led organisation that supports children and adults with additional needs and learning disabilities, providing a safe and enriching environment through books, games, arts, and social opportunities. The donation will directly support the enhancement of its services, maintenance of equipment, and the delivery of new community-led initiatives.
Vicky Ross, Chair of the Spennymoor Learning Library, said: “We are grateful for this generous donation and thank the Mayor and Town Council for its ongoing support.
“Derek’s support, and that of the wider community, means so much to our charity, volunteers and families. This funding will help us to expand activities, upgrade resources and continue creating a welcoming space for all. Derek has not only provided financial help but also shone a spotlight on the work we do.”
Cllr Taylor’s mayoral term was marked by a strong focus on community cohesion, local pride, and supporting grassroots initiatives. He has supported groups making a difference in and around the town.
