A Momentous Occasion

Spennymoor Town Council’s VE Day 80th Anniversary celebrations proved poignant, commemorative and joyous.

The flag raising at the Town Hall was conducted by veteran Major (Retired) Pete Reed, Royal Engineers, who served his country for 36 years. Originally from Leicester, he married a Spennymoor girl and settled in the Town following retirement.

The evening event in Jubilee Park began with a performance from Spennymoor Town Band along with “Wor Vera”, a wonderful tribute to “Forces Sweetheart” Dame Vera Lynn.

Spennymoor Mayor, Cllr Derek Taylor, lit the Beacon as “I Vow to Thee My Country” played out and people joined I to sing along.

Attendees enjoyed the traditional pie and peas supper and came together to raise a multitude of Union Jacks and toast 80 years since the end of WWII.
