Volunteer team help perk up the park

Spennymoor Town Mayor, Cllr Derek Taylor, welcomed a team of committed volunteers to add a little gloss to Jubilee Park.

The five helpers were from local housebuilder, Barratt Homes, who volunteered time to help paint benches across the park.

Amy Ward, John Ainsley, Dominic Smith, Neil Milburn and Kerry Moore all work for Barratt Homes’ Land and Development team – they spent the day helping get the park ready for the busy summer events season.

Cllr Taylor said:

“What a fantastic effort from the Barrat Homes volunteers, whose efforts were really a huge help for us ahead of the busy summer period. It’s great to know that we are part of such a supportive Spennymoor community, and we look forward to seeing Jubilee Park in full bloom over the coming months.

“Initiatives like this are so welcome and the Town Council would love to hear from other local businesses who would like to get involved with volunteering.”

Jubilee Park will host Armed Forces Day – its first event of a busy summer – this weekend (Saturday June 22). Open all year, it hosts many family-friendly events including the Family Fun Day and Party in the Park. It also features its own Sensory Garden, complete with a variety of colourful plants tended by the Town Council. Other facilities include bowling greens and pavilion, MUGA, tennis court and basketball, football pitch, bandstand and multiple play and picnic areas.

Danny Booth, grounds and estates officer at Spennymoor Town Council commented:

“The weather has been great for the volunteers who really worked hard in the sunshine. It has been a huge help to us, as the relentless rain of the past few months has caused delays to planned work activity.”

Neil Milburn, land and development director at Barratt Homes North East, said:

“We’re pleased we were able to offer a helping hand to the Town Council, swapping computers for compost to spend a day volunteering. The Council does a fantastic job maintaining the wonderful park, especially with it playing such a valued role for the local community, and we look forward to seeing more visitors make full use of this fantastic space as we welcome the warmer weather!”
